In Other Words Books: An Endangered Species

In Other Words Books: An Endangered Species

by Vanessa Anthony

We all know that our country is going through the worst economic recession in years. If you’re not feeling it in your own bottom line, you’re certainly hearing about it daily- from friends, family and the media.

You’re also seeing some of your favorite businesses and restaurants around town closing (see the growing goodbye and closure posts here on this site.)

And while we all may be focusing on how to keep the most money in our own pockets (especially in the holiday season) let’s not forget the many worthwhile causes, businesses and the people who take the personal financial risk to bring us some of the favorite things in our neighborhoods.

Earlier this week, I was notified that one of our most beloved bookstores and a great feminist resource is in dire straits. In Other Words Books, the last non-profit feminist bookstore in the country, will soon be closing unless they receive the $11,000 in needed donations before the end of the year.

I (like many of you) have spent countless happy hours browsing their stacks, chatting with staff, perusing the huge selection of DIY Zines and attending their many cool community awareness building events like the Bitch Magazine release parties, debate nights, Luna Music Series and the Feminist Film Society. As both a woman and a writer, I will be greatly saddened and disappointed to see such a place forced to extinction. I repeat THIS IS THE LAST OF IT’S KIND and for that reason, if for no other, it MUST be preserved.

So whether you are a feminist or not- if you are a reader, if you are a writer, if you are a woman or have women in your life- a place like In Other Words should be important to you. Please tell your friends and neighbors and whether you can give a little or a lot- let’s pull together and try to save this Portland institution for women everywhere.

Here’s how you can help. This is the letter they have posted on their site:

Dear friends,

In Other Words, like so many of our fellow bookstores, has fallen upon incredibly hard financial times. With the decline in our current economy, we have experienced severely decreased revenue. If we are unable to raise $11,000 by the end of December, In Other Words will have to close its doors.

We desperately need your help. We are confident that if everyone who cares about In Other Words makes a contribution, large or small, we will meet our goal. Please give as generously as you can to save the last remaining non-profit, feminist bookstore in the country: the place where so many Portland artists, activists, organizers, readers, writers, political thinkers, musicians and poets find their voice, their power, their community, and their political home.

Our community cannot afford to lose In Other Words, please help us save her!

You can make your tax-deductible donations by clicking the link “Support In Other Words“, or by stopping into the store.

Please forward this widely to your community, we need all the help we can get!

Sincerely, The Board, Staff and Volunteers of In Other Words
